In the morning of March 21st, a colloquium was held in the International Academic Communication Center of our school and the theme of it was “Continue to strive for the Reform and Innovation”. Lin Jianhua, who is the deputy director of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National People’s Congress and the former principal of the Peking University, gave an advanced report as invited.

Lin Jianhua analyzed the resource distribution of higher education and illuminated that the essence of building a first-class university is to improve comprehensive abilities, including the talent training and the technological innovation capabilities and the ability to serve society. To make his utterances more specific, Lin took the Peking University, Zhejiang University and Chongqing University as examples. He pointed out that to build up a first-class university, a general strategy needs to be formulated, a long-term goal set and put into specific tasks which can be carried out in different stages. In addition, we should take specific measures and develop a scenario of resource allocation. Then we can concentrate on the adjustment of subjects, the building of teams, the educational system and a contemporary university governance system, so that we can create an environment to get the best out of the potential and creativity of teachers and students. To achieve that, Lin suggested that the college should provide an excellent academic environment, have firm determination, patience and perseverance. In this way, the ability to run a university and realize the transformation of development mode gradually can be improved. Finally, Lin pointed out that all these measures will form the lasting base of building a “Double First-Class” university.
